Political Commentary on myRollingwood

Citizens have begun using myRollingwood to post commentary on political issues. This dialog serves to strengthen the City, but it may also confuse myRollingwood readers who are not seeking this type of information.

To ensure that commentary is clearly identified, posters must observe the following guidelines:

  • Clearly state that this is your opinion by prefix your post with “Opinion:”
  • Use only the “commentary” category for all editorial posts
  • Use a “split” (editing icon is split) after the first paragraph
  • Must be published with actual name, physical address, & email address. No handles, aliases, or anonymous posts
  • Must be civil and non-defamatory

The Rollingwood Neighborhood Association does not endorse any political position and reserves the right to edit or censor posts.

If this usage is abused then we will not longer be able to allow the use of myRollingwood for commentary.

Opinion: Water System Debt, Property Values, Taxes

If the three incumbents running for election win, they intend for the City to submit the certificates of obligation and associated construction plan to voter approval as proposed rather than to revamp their proposal even to recognize recently acknowledged changes to the project (elimination of the line to nowhere, for example). Proponents of their plan have argued erroneously that increased property valuations, which they predict in spite of seeming contradictory trends, will somehow reduce the burden of the debt service which issuance of these certificates necessarily imposes. Their argument is most misleading.

Opinion: Water System Improvements: Where Do We Go From Here?

  • The Line to Nowhere will be eliminated from the project.
  • The 12’’ water source into the Endeavor Tract will be connected to Timberline, providing a major new flow to the eastern side of the system.
  • The pressure analysis will be redone in consideration of the new 12’’ source of flow to the east side, identifying any areas of critically low system pressure.
  • A prioritized schedule of individual facilities (i.e. individual fire hydrants, pressure values, pressure regulators, water mains), individually costed out, will be prepared, with fire protection receiving the highest priority, critically low pressure the next, and corroded or damaged lines the next.
  • The position of each individual facility on the prioritized list should be justified based on its effectiveness to solve a high priority problem and its cost-effectiveness compared to other possible solutions.
  • A $100,000 water system maintenance and replacement item will be included henceforth in the City’s annual budget and will be used in lieu of borrowing to the maximum extent possible to effectuate water system improvements.

Opinion: Casstevens asks for vote about water loans

These opinions were posted by Earnest Casstevens as part of the discussion about the City’s proposed water project.

Rollingwood citizens should be allowed to vote on the water loans!

The City Council of the City of Rollingwood intends to take final action at its next meeting to borrow $2,350,000 ($4700 per household) as Part 1 of a $5,274,100 loan ($10,500 per household) for water system facilities. Under the law, 5% of Rollingwood’s qualified voters can petition to require the City to obtain voter approval before issuing the debt. The citizens of Rollingwood should insist on voter approval!
