City Wide Clean Up: 3/10-3/25

The City is holding the annual Clean Up in March.  The dumpsters will be available from 3/10 to 3/25.  Dumpsters are for use by city residents (or contractors working for residents) only.

Chipping will be available at City Hall (not curb side).  Contact the City if you need help hauling limbs to the chipper.  Wood chips are available to anyone; however, if they are from infected trees then wood chips may transmit Oak Wilt!

Campaign Ethics (read the rules governing campaigns)

At the last City Council meeting, our city attorney made an important presentation about campaign ethics. It is a widely held belief that our last campaign was highly divisive in the community. It is very disturbing to hear stories about unethical campaigning and even worse to believe that our citizens would use and fall for these tactics.
At the request of City Council, I am posting part of the State Fair Campaign practices code that candidates are asked to voluntarily follow. According to our laws:

There are basic principles of decency, honesty, and fair play that every candidate and political committee in this state has a moral obligation to observe and uphold, in order that, after vigorously contested but fairly conducted campaigns, our citizens may exercise their constitutional rights to a free and untrammeled choice and the will of the people may be fully and clearly expressed on the issues.

THEREFORE:

(1) I will conduct the campaign openly and publicly and limit attacks on my opponent to legitimate challenges to my opponent’s record and stated positions on issues.

(2) I will not use or permit the use of character defamation, whispering campaigns, libel, slander, or scurrilous attacks on any candidate or the candidate’s personal or family life.

(3) I will not use or permit any appeal to negative prejudice based on race, sex, religion, or national origin.

(4) I will not use campaign material of any sort that misrepresents, distorts, or otherwise falsifies the facts, nor will I use malicious or unfounded accusations that aim at creating or exploiting doubts, without justification, as to the personal integrity or patriotism of my opponent.

(5) I will not undertake or condone any dishonest or unethical practice that tends to corrupt or undermine our system of free elections or that hampers or prevents the full and free expression of the will of the voters, including any activity aimed at intimidating voters or discouraging them from voting.

(6) I will defend and uphold the right of every qualified voter to full and equal participation in the electoral process, and will not engage in any activity aimed at intimidating voters or discouraging them from voting.

(7) I will immediately and publicly repudiate methods and tactics that may come from others that I have pledged not to use or condone. I shall take firm action against any subordinate who violates any provision of this code or the laws governing elections.

Alert: Break in on Timberline!

From Catherine Horne:
Last Friday at 3:30 AM, someone came into the Horne’s house from their backyard.  The opening tripped the alarm, but not before they grabbed a purse, a checkbook and a few random things. Whoever it was came through the side gate and walked through the yard up to the back of the house where there are lots of windows.  They also looked at their neighbor’s house because their key pad to their garage had been messed with.
The police said they have had a number of purse snatchings and such from cars that have been left unlocked or are out in the open between 2 and 4 AM.  However, this is the first time where they have gone into a home.  The police mentioned Timberline gets hit more often due to the ease of in and out in the neighborhood.

Throwing in your hat?

If you’re interested in serving our city at the highest levels then consider running for City Council. There are three seats up for election this year. Our city may be small, but we’re proud of our volunteer Aldermen, Alderwomen, and Mayor!

You can file as early as Saturday, Feb 10th and the deadline is Monday, March 12th at 5 pm. Pick-up the copious Texas sized application form at City Hall.
